WONDERING ABOUT WORDPRESS

What ARE we going to do about WordPress? We were just talking about it, Garry, Owen and me. At $180 per year, that would be $15/month and then there’s another $20 for you URL address. $200? I’ll renew this year because it’s coming up very soon. That will give me a year to ponder the future and what I want to do about it.

As a writer, I hate giving up the opportunity to write when I want to knowing somebody will read it. I always laugh when someone says he or she doesn’t care whether or not anyone reads what he/she wrote. If that’s how they feel, why have a blog? A diary would do just as well and be a lot less work. Cheaper, too.

I’ve been doing this a long time and nothing lasts forever. Garry said he began to feel like that at work toward the end. Every story was a rerun of another few hundred similar stories he’d already covered. He could have pre-taped the news with notes to “insert current footage here.” I think they may already BE doing that. I don’t know if I really even WANT to try another venue, thought I might if it’s free or cheap.

There are always places to post photos. I don’t need a blog for that. It’s the writing that needs a home, even though I don’t write nearly as much as I did. Mostly, because I feel as if I’ve said everything I wanted to say at least twice and maybe more. I’m always surprised when I actually have an original idea.

Substack is an option, but it’s really more of a business option for writers. I’m not sure it’s my kind of place.

I’m also not sure I want to pay that kind of money for this mess. The engineers, our beloved “happiness engineers” — the absolutely stupidest name ever give to a development group — aren’t going to make the application work any better. I know people who are already paying the full price for the “business application” and it doesn’t work any better for them than it does for us.

Garry thinks I should hang in there if I still want to write because — well — I’m a writer and sometimes, I need to write. The question is whether or not there are other ways I can write and be read. That remains to be seen. It also remains to be thought about.
